Raven Queen & World Away

Raven Queen and A World Away are both written by the same author and are both super historical fiction tie ins for middle and high school. Raven Queen deals with the real life princess who was Queen for just 9 days in Great Britain. This is a great tie in for the reformation as well, since there is discussion of the "new faith" (as referred to in the text) breaking away from the Catholic Church along with some of the reasons for, and political ramifications of, this schism. The role of women in the politics of the time is also a topic for discussion.

A World Away is history on the other side of the pond. This book deals with the English colonists who trounced an Indian village and brought back it's princess to their English town, where a young man falls in love with her and she with him. Then the English took her home to offer peace and take more settlers. There is much suffering as the two cultures collide, for some the story ends happily, but it is bittersweet. Much can be gleaned from this text to carry discussions about colonization, leadership, native cultures versus industrialized settlers and survival in other lands.

Both stories have a "love story" intertwined, but they are also age appropriate and there is no objectionable content. Both help to bring history to life in the context of these moving stories told from the perspectives of two main characters (one male voice and one female) in each book.

What is Sweetrees? What does Sweetrees Mean?

Welcome to our world! We are a homeschooling family with 5 children, Kyle, Brandon, Adam, Caleb, Jamie and one more on the way...due October 2010.

First let me explain what "Sweetrees" means.

The name came without a doubt, from God...because it was a misunderstanding between Paula & I. We were newlyweds and just establishing our new life and routine as husband and wife. We were setting down for the night, talking about our day and our hopes and dreams, we both felt the desire to serve others and to open our lives and our home to others in need…like a bed & breakfast. We decided it was time to go to sleep when one of us (after all these years we really do not who said it and who misunderstood what was said, it doesn’t really matter) said “Sweet dreams” BUT the other one heard “Sweet trees” Sweet trees??? We both just started laughing and it hit us both at the same time “What a peaceful sounding name for a B&B… Sweet sounds so nice, so pleasant, so restful… and Trees always paints an image of tranquility, peacefulness, a place that’s relaxing, shade from the hot sun, protection from the wind and rain and if it’s the right kind of tree, i.e. fruit or nut, nourishment. With the right skills one can even live IN a tree (Swiss Family Robinson?) SO we both agreed immediately that God just gave us the name of our future B&B “Sweet Trees”
This has lead us down many paths fine tuning our vision with God’s vision and the fun part is that this vision changes DAILY…

The name “Sweet Trees” was condensed to “Sweetrees” thanks to the internet because pushing the two words together for our new email address just looked weird – “sweettrees”? SO we agreed to drop one “t” and Sweetrees was born.
The bottom line is that Sweetrees has many branches and new branches are constantly being added, branches that help us provide support to anyone who is need of rest, comfort, advice, not clinical, we have life experience, but have not received formal education as counselors, we don’t pretend to or claim to be licensed in this field. We offer ears to listen, shoulders cry on and our home to be used however God wants us to use it. We don’t have that B&B, but we believe that our house should feel like a B&B, warm and welcome, open to all of our family and friends. Paula is a professional trainer and speaker, she can explain things that other can not, she can help you understand what you need to learn, one on one or in a group. You can check out her profile and credentials along with mine in the section offering these details.
So Sweetrees is a work in progress and I recently came up with a brief (unofficial definition) because we always get that look and question “What is sweetrees? Is it a nursery for plants or do you sell honey or fruit?”

Sweet-trees is:
1 - (n) a place of refuge, for rest and renewal, a place to learn and grow.
2 - (n) an expression used, wishing someone “to be at peace with confidence; to feel comfortable and safe, to be able to rest."
3 - Exodus 15:25 "And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD showed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet…"

One of the branches of Sweetrees is Usborne Books and More of EDC (Educational Development Corporation began its Home Business Division in March, 1989. This Division, operating as Usborne Books & More, markets the entire Usborne line of over 1,300 titles through a combination of direct sales, home shows, book fairs, fund raisers, grants and school and library sales. A network system of more than 9,000 independent sales consultants currently represent Usborne books.)
We fell in love with Usborne books long before we looked into the possibility of owning our own business and becoming consultants for these great books. We joined Usborne in November 2007 as a way to receive access to all that Usborne offers and to provide a second income for our family. We were so surprised to find out what a small amount of money was required to really begin our business. I was called to jury duty for three days and we had all the money needed to buy the starter kit! And the possibilities are truly endless for how we can customize this to truly fit the needs of our family We would love to talk with you further about how to make this business something that can positively impact your family as well.

The purpose of this website is to let you know what else we, Sweetrees, can offer to you, your small group, Your home school family or group, your church or any other group you may be a part of. Paula is a professional trainer and a gifted speaker, she has the ability to teach...anything. If she doesn't already have the training material designed, she can and would look forward to creating it for you, in book form or as a training class. It is our hope and prayer to be here to provide prayer, training, consultation and support.

Scripture reminds us that without a vision, the people perish. Oftentimes we appoint the leaders of our churches simply by finding someone who is willing and never offer the training and insight they need to do their job effectively. Welcome to our Family

Sweetrees is a family ministry, welcoming your family to our home.

We are a homeschooling family with 5 children, Kyle, Brandon, Adam, Caleb and Jamie.

We live in Stockbridge, Georgia since the summer of 2000, we moved Up south from Florida where Paula and I were houseparents at the Methodist Childrens Home in Enterprise, Florida for 5 years where we were blessed with the opportunity to grow in our faith, our abilities to parent and our own family as we arrived with one son and left five years later with four, of our own plus some strong relationships with close to 70 young ladies who passed through our home for a few months to a few years at an average of 7 girls at a time...this was our boot camp into parenting, I'm sure that we made a lot of mistakes, but we sure learned a lot...especially how to call on the name of our Lord in a crisis and then to give thanks in those few moments of peace and quiet. I could add so much more here, but then I would take away from the book Paula is writing about our testimony… Let me just add that after we left the Childrens home we have added one more blessing from God, our little girl 8 years after our youngest son was born…we thought we were done, but God had other plans!
We found the best church when we moved here, Stockbridge Assembly of God and the best Pastor’s and church family who have supported us in so many ways and have allowed us to grow even more in our faith and our service to the Lord. Paula has been attending seminary, now in her third year and our oldest son, Kyle has just joined her in his first year while still attending high school, his junior year. All of our kids show signs of having a call on their lives as we pray over them daily and they are an active part in this ministry as well as our home based business.

For those of you who have never had the pleasure, please let me introduce him. He is 17 years old (18 at the end of the year) but he has more wisdom then most 40 year olds I know (speaking as a 44 year old, I can't keep up with him) He is our first born son (1 of 4 boys and 1 girl) He has had a call on his life from the day he could speak to reach and preach to the lost of his generation, what he didn't realize is that he is also speaking to our generation as well. God speaks through him on a regular basis. He is currently attending seminary through the Assemblies of God in Macon, Ga with his Mom while attending public high school in his junior year. One of the many hats he wears at his school, which include the academic and athletic departments, he is head of the FCA, he directs and anchors the morning news cast, is the latin club president and has been the Cross Country team captain and is on the track team as well. He has very little spare time because when he is not in school he is busy with his youth group at church, on the praise team and the leadership team...anyway, he's a very busy young man, as well as being a great example for his brothers and sister who admire him and look up to him and are following very closely in his foot steps. I say all this obviously as a proud father but also to say that if you take the time to read his blogs, you too will be blessed as God speaks into your life... May you be blessed as you follow the many adventures that God has taken and is about to take Kyle on...better buckle your spiritual seat belt, you are in for an adventure.

One day, Heloise finds a doll under her bedroom floorboards. Against her godmother’s wishes, she keeps it. And that’s when the delicate truce between Heloise and her godmother begins to unravel …

Heloise runs away. She journeys far, but knows that one day she must return to uncover the secret at the heart of her being.

Review: In a prison far away and long ago lives a young man who as hope vanishes nearly completely, is visited by birds who instruct him to tell stories. The same birds visit a young girl whose hope has disappeared completely as she lies in a mental institution. However she does not listen to the birds, and at once they know they cannot help her. And so begins Cassandra Golds’ The Museum of Mary Child. At the center of the story is a young girl, Heloise, of a nondescript age who lives with her godmother in a house completely lacking in any sort of love or compassion. Her godmother runs a museum on their property – a horrific museum that leaves its visitors shocked and appalled – The Museum of Mary Child. Heloise knows only this life – a life of solitude, fear, loneliness, and emptiness. She is forbidden to ask questions or speak with other children or even to enter the museum. Her reading is monitored so much so that her Bible is glued together so that she does not read parts her godmother deems unnecessary. But for the most part, Heloise accepts her station in life – simply because she doesn’t know any better. However, more than anything else, Heloise wants a doll; for although Heloise knows nothing about “love”, a doll can be loved and can love unconditionally. Much to her surprise, Heloise notices a floorboard that is not quite like the others, and hidden beneath the floor is a doll. Everything in Heloise’s life changes at that very moment. The Museum of Mary Child is a story of stories. The lives of the prisoner, the ward in the mental institution, and Heloise are intertwined tighter and tighter as the novel progresses. With the help of the birds, Heloise realizes that “everything is in prison” and that only she can bring down the “bars” that confine them all.

Both intriguing and disturbing, The Museum of Mary Child captures its readers and thrusts them into a world that is both known and unknown to us all. The rather complex story is intertwined beautifully around a central theme – the power of love. Although at times, particularly early on in the novel, the plot seems to drag, curiosity propels the reader ahead in a need to uncover the mystery behind Heloise and her connection to the museum and the unfortunate souls.

The character development in this novel is simply outstanding. Heloise is a multi-layered character. As the story begins, the reader is merely aware of the outer layer – the girl that is oppressed and forced to avoid anything that could be construed as A Waste of Time. However, as Heloise learns to love in spite of her godmother and escapes the ties that bind her, we are introduced to a deeper layer as she begins to make sense of her previous life. Heloise runs away with her doll to a new home and feels true love for the first time. “It was as if the blood in her veins had turned into something shining and magical.” Once Heloise learns that everything is in prison and that she is the only one who can bring freedom, we meet a more mature and wise Heloise, one that is willing to risk her new freedom and newfound family to free others. Finally, at the intense climax, Heloise is stripped of her layers and we are finally able to understand the real Heloise.

Along with Heloise, the reader is required to recognize the bars that imprison all of us. Golds incorporates remarkable symbolism throughout the novel that forces deep reflection while reading. At once, the reader suddenly realizes that this book isn’t just about Heloise, but rather it’s about the reader. We all are part of a story, and we all are bound by bars of some kind. Ultimately we all can begin to tear down those bars with something as simple, but yet as complex as love. The Museum of Mary Child is undoubtedly a book that can be read over and over again uncovering new meanings with each reading.

Taking the Lead in Serving the Flock

Premise

Traditionally the Pastor and a core group of individuals in the church are the ones who are primarily responsible for the care and provision of all of the members of the church. Oftentimes leaders are chosen out of immediate need and not given the training they may need to truly fulfill their position in the church. This puts them in a place where many members of the congregation view them as a role model when they are truly not prepared to serve in that capacity. This study will offer the tools leaders need to be truly effective in ministry as well as empower them to become the mentors needed for their part of the flock.

True Leadership goes beyond serving for an hour each week in a class or other setting.

It requires that leaders live the life they teach in front of those they are teaching. Many times people are thrown into leadership positions by way of their marriage partner. Being married to a pastor or deacon doesn't necessarily mean that a person is qualified to lead, but it does mean that members of the congregation may view them as a part of the leading voice of the church. What does scripture say is their responsibility in this position? This study will explore this role and help create new leaders in the process.

Primary Objective of Study

The purpose of this study is to empower leaders to respond to their God given responsibility and calling and step up as role models and mentors to those in their world.

Target Audience

All those serving in leadership roles within the church are encouraged to participate including the obvious; the pastors, deacons Sunday School Teachers, and ministry leaders, but should also include those not generally considered to be serving in a leadership capacity, such as pastor's spouses, ushers, greeters, deacons/elders spouses, etc. This session is designed for anyone who is currently serving in these roles or anyone who wishes to in the future.

Mentoring a New Generation for Christ

Scripture is bursting with people who lived their lives in such a way that their children and grandchildren were blessed by their faithfulness. Each lesson in this study looks at a different person in the Bible and the character trait they passed on to their children and to those who were around them. Ultimately, every lesson leads back to Jesus, the perfect example of what we aspire for all of our children to become. Mentors come into our lives in many different ways. What we teach others is both intentional and unintentional. It’s true that our actions speak louder than our words. If we want to truly serve God and see others come to Him, we must begin by cleaning our own hearts.
This curriculum explores over 40 different character traits such as forgiveness, faith, perseverance, kindness and courage. It teaches first how to apply these traits to our own lives, then how to mentor others in the same way. It is designed to train leaders who will have the privilege of watching others become all that God has for them to become.
